- The two-step method for preparing 1,3-butadiene from ethanol was invented based on a one-step method. Firstly, in one reactor, ethanol is dehydrogenated to produce acetaldehyde under the catalysis of an alkaline catalyst such as copper-based catalysts; in another reactor, acetaldehyde reacts with ethanol to produce butadiene. The chemical equations are as follows: C2H6O→C2H4O + H2 C2H6O + C2H4O →C4H6 +2H2O
